The Indian Institute of Technology, Delhi Thursday mourned the death of its retired professor M C Puri in Wednesday's shootout in Bangalore, terming it as a great loss to the institute.

Addressing a condolence meeting at the institute, IIT Delhi Director D P Kothari said the staff and students "deeply mourn the tragic, sad and untimely demise of professor Puri".

Puri had joined IIT in May 1984 and was an emeritus professor of mathematics.

He won several laurels for his work on the subject.

The professor had gone to Bangalore to attend an international seminar on 'Operational Research' when the terror attack took place, killing him and injuring four others.
