Honest railwayman returns $40,000

February 06, 2004 23:15 IST

Honest men are still around, even if they are becoming rare.

And proving that was a Western Railway peon who returned a bag containing US $40,000, a passport and other valuables to the owner.

Mohammed, who works as a peon in the Churchgate office, found an unattended bag near the headquarters and deposited it with the Station Manager's office, a WR release said.

The bag owner, who had come from Saudi Arabia, had left his belonging at the office while booking his ticket for New Delhi. An announcement was made and the bag was handed over to the owner.

Mohammed refused the owner's offer of cash reward politely.
