rediff.com Newsdesk | September 17, 2003 18:54 IST

The Arabic network Al Arabiya on Wednesday broadcast an audio statement attributed to former Iraqi president Saddam Hussein.

In his statement, the ousted leader called for resistance to American troops.

Last month, Qatar-based channel Al-Jazeera broadcast a tape also purported to carry Hussein's voice.

CIA officials said they believed the voice on the earlier tape was that of Hussein.
