Water in Mettur reservoir
to last only 10 days

N Sathiya Moorthy in Chennai

Irrigation officials in Tamil Nadu are an anxious lot as the Cauvery delta farmers are planning to commence work on the samba (kharif) crop despite predictions that the water in the all-important Mettur reservoir would not last for more than 10 days.

Tamil Nadu had released water from the Mettur reservoir on the hope that Karnataka would release 1.25 thousand million cubic feet of water per day as directed by the Supreme Court.

This figure was later revised to 0.8 TMC per day by the Cauvery River Authority, which Tamil Nadu has said is unacceptable.

The water level, which stood at 67 feet on Friday last week, when the reservoir was opened for irrigation nearly three months behind schedule, has now come down to 57 feet, TN officials told reporters on Saturday.

Tamil Nadu has charged neighbour Karnataka with not abiding, in the past 10 days, either with the direction of the Supreme Court or the 'unacceptable decision' of the CRA in releasing Cauvery waters.
