Angry farmers stop release of Cauvery waters to Tamil Nadu

Fakir Chand in Bangalore

Thousands of farmers stormed the Krishna Raja Sagar dam near Mysore on Monday evening and shut its crest gates to prevent water flowing into the Mettur dam in Tamil Nadu, as ordered by the Cauvery River Authority on Sunday.

The CRA had ordered Karnataka to release 9000 cusecs of water per day, as against Tamil Nadu's demand for 1.25 tmc feet of water per day.

The agitated farmers claimed they were facing shortage due to the failure of the south-west monsoon for the second consecutive year.

With already a quantum of 7tmc feet water released since September 4, as per the directives of the Supreme Court, the farmers are apprehensive that if the Cauvery waters continue to be released their agricultural operations will be severely hit.

The farmers also criticised the Krishna government for having 'compromised the interests of the state'.

Meanwhile, irrigation authorities at the Kabini reservoir in the neighbouring Chamarajanagar district said they could not release waters to Tamil Nadu as rampaging farmers had damaged the crest gates.

Mandya district, about 100 km from Bangalore on way to Mysore, has already seen road blockades, rallies and dharnas by angry farmers.
