PM will meet CMs to narrow down differences

The government today made it clear that it had sought time from the Supreme Court on the Cauvery issue as the states concerned were adamant on their respective stands and announced that Prime Minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee would hold discussions with chief ministers of these states to reach a solution.

Justifying the government's action in seeking adjournment of hearing in the case, Parliamentary Affairs Minister Madan Lal Khurana told the Lok Sabha that a solution was not feasible at this stage in the wake of tghe hardened position taken by the states involved in the issue.

He said the situation might become explosive if the matter remained unresolved, and that the government was working for a solution.

According to him, the prime minister will hold talks with the chief ministers to narrow down differences and resolve the issue.

Khurana's reply came soon after the House witnessed uproarious scenes for the second day today when the river issue was raised by All India Anna DMK leader Sedapatti R Muthaiah who was interrupted vociferously by MPs from Karnataka.
