ODIs a challenge for us: Strauss

Harish Kotian in New Delhi | March 26, 2006 22:01 IST

England [Images] opener Andrew Strauss [Images] said his team would be looking to carry forward the momentum of the Test series into the seven-match one-day international series, beginning on Tuesday.

"The one-day series is a big challenge for us. India is a great one-day side but we are looking to carry forward the momentum of the Test series," Strauss said in New Delhi on Tuesday.

The left-hander added that the younger players had performed exceptionally well in the Tests after the team lost a few senior players along with captain Michael Vaughan [Images].

"The young players have proved themselves in the absence of some senior players in the Tests. They are capable of doing the same in the one-dayers," he said.

Asked whether the loss of Sachin Tendulkar [Images] would give England the edge, he replied: "We are not underestimating India because Sachin is not there. They have a good bench strength and that showed in the way we were beaten in the warm-up match in Jaipur yesterday."

He further said that this series would help them gain vital experience, especially with the World Cup coming up next year.

"This series will help us know how good a side we are. With the World Cup around, it is very important for us to play consistently and gain experience from every series that we play in," the left-hander said.

Asked to rate Andrew Flintoff's [Images] captaincy, he said: "He has done a fantastic job. He did not get enough time to prepare for the job but he was inspirational and led from the front and all the boys supported him."
