Lanka launches talent hunt

Rather shocked by a disastrous tour of Australia, the Sri Lankan cricket establishment has come together to seek remedies.

In Australia, the once all-conquering World Cup heroes managed to scrape together just three wins out of ten games in the triangular series with England as the third angle of the triangle.

Post-tour analysis appears to be unanimous in putting Lanka's plight down to the absence of a good bowling attack. In a bid to remedy this situation, the SL board announced a search for talented bowlers, both pace and spin, at the grassroots level.

Board of Control for Cricket in Sri Lanka chief executive Dammika Ranatunga, in a press note, indicates that the search for talented bowlers begins this week, and spans all schools in the country.

Former Test stars Somachandra D'Silva and Rumesh Ratnayake will spearhead the talent search, and selected bowlers will then be sent to specialised clinics for refining their skills.

Ranatunga indicated that simultaneously, efforts would be on to beef up the team's bowling strength with a view to the upcoming World Cup, where Sri Lanka are the defending titlists.
