Boycott says 'no' to coaching Pakis

The efforts of the Pakistan Cricket Board to appoint Geoff Boycott, former England Captain and opener, as coach of its cricket team have come a cropper, with the latter turning down the offer.

The PCB wanted Boycott to be with the side during the World Cup since it was felt that his extensive experience of English conditions would be of immense value to the team.

Speaking to Rediff On The Net, Asad Mustafa, assistant manager of the Pakistan Cricket Board said during the Asian Test championship match in Lahore between hosts Pakistan and Sri Lanka, board chairman Khalid Mahmood had spoken to members of the council about appointing Boycott as coach.

Though coach Javed Miandad and skipper Wasim Akram were against any such move, Khalid Mahmood was keen on having Boycott travel with the team throughout the World Cup.

The Pakistan team is currently in India for the triangular series involving hosts India and Sri Lanka, and will head for Sharjah for another triangular involving India and England starting from April 8.

The team will then travel to England in late April and stay in Derbyshire to acclimatise themselves with the cold conditions.

Boycott is currently in Jamshedpur, with the WorldTel team covering the triangular tournament. Pakistan play Sri Lanka in the opener on Friday.
