Penalising a man for refusing to bring up his 2-year-old daughter, a mahapanchayat has slapped a fine of Rs 5.25 lakh on him and asked the community to boycott him.

A community mahapanchayat met at Roorkali village Sunday to decide the fate of the abandoned girl Amrin as her father Javed had failed to abide by its earlier order to look after her.

After careful deliberations, the governing body decided to impose a fine of Rs 5.25 lakh on him and issued the social boycott call.

Javed married Sajida Begum three years ago and filed for divorce after she became pregnant, citing infidelity as the ground and refusing to accept the child as his.

On Oct 15, 2004, the village panchayat allowed the divorce provided Javed brought up the child after a year.

Both parties then agreed to the condition. On June 3, he married again and his second wife refused to adopt the child. Sajida too has decided to remarry, leaving the 2-year-old in the lurch.
