Mulayam gets reprieve from SC

May 22, 2003 13:07 IST

The Supreme Court on Thursday dismissed a petition filed by the Uttar Pradesh government challenging an Allahabad high court order staying investigations into cases against Mulayam Singh Yadav, the Samajwadi Party leader and former chief minister.

Chief Minister Mayawati had on April 14 filed 137 cases against Yadav for alleged misuse of the chief minister's discretionary fund during 1993-95. But the Lucknow bench of the Allahabad HC had on May 7 restrained the government from proceeding with investigations till August 19, when it would hear a petition filed by Yadav

A vacation bench, comprising Justice N Santosh Hedge and Justice Shivaraj V Patil, rejected the government's allegation that the HC had acted in a biased manner by passing a favourable order against Yadav.

It said the HC would hear the petition filed by Yadav in August.
