Atulya Ghosh, the Congress strongman, was elected from here in 1957 and 1962, after which barring two terms it has been the CPI-M all the way. In 1989, Hardhan Roy defeated two-time Congress MP Anand G Mukherjee, and has been elected to Parliament thrice in a row. In 1996 he defeated the Congress's Sukumar Bandyopadhyay by 47,000 votes.
