Hiren Mukherjee won this seat for the CPI-M till 1971, before he was defeated by the Lok Dal in 1977. In 1980 the CPI-M took back the seat defeating the Congress's Ajit Kumar Panja who, in the next election, was elected with a thumping majority. Panja managed to retain the seat even in 1996 when he defeated the CPI-M's Dipen Ghosh by 65,000 votes.
