Maulana Abul Kalam Azad's secretary and George Fernandes's father-in-law Humayun Kabir represented the Congress in 1962 and 1967. In 1980 and 1984, this was represented by Indrajit Gupta of the CPI. Manoranjan Sur took over in 1989 and 1991, and in 1996 Ajay Chakraborty kept it in the CPI fold. He defeated the Congress's Dilip Majumdar by 86,000 votes.
