B K Daschowdhury won this seat for the Forward Bloc first in 1967, and was re-elected on the Congress ticket the next time round. In 1977, Amar Roy Pradhan defeated him and reclaimed the seat for the Forward Bloc, and has held on to the seat, making it six times in a row. In 1996, he defeated the Congress's Sabita Roy by 89,000 votes, making it the third time in a row that he trounced Roy.
