Ram Singh enabled the BJP to win this seat for the first time in 1991. In 1996, the BJP changed its candidate to Harpal Sathi, and retained the seat. The SP's Jagpal Singh, a Congress MP in 1989, came second, losing by 66,000 votes. The Congress, whose stronghold this was once upon a time, could get only 4.93 % of the vote.
