Sunder Lal won this seat for the Congress five consecutive times. In 1977, the constituency voted for Rasheed Masood, who retained the seat in 1980 as well. In 1984, however, he was unable to withstand the Rajiv wave, and lost to Yashpal Singh. Masood took back the seat in 1989 and 1991, and in 1996 the constituency voted BJP for the first time, electing Nakli Singh who defeated Masood by just 2,500 votes. The BSP, which was also in the fray, cornered 153,535 votes. Kanshi Ram is the BSP candidate this time.
