Chaudhary Charan Singh's electoral debut was not all that noteworthy. In 1971, when he contested from here on the BLD ticket, he was defeated by Vijay Pal Singh of the CPI, and the next election saw him move to Baghpat. Home minister in the V P Singh cabinet, Mufti Mohamed Sayeed, represented this constituency in 1989, before he lost to the BJP's Naresh K Baliyan in 1991. The BJP changed its candidate to Sohanbir in 1996, and held on to this seat. Sanjay Singh, then of the SP, came second, losing by 34,000 votes. The BSP's Tara Chand Shastri was in third place, winning 114,413 votes.
