In 1967 Ram Manohar Lohia was elected. In 1984, Sheila Dixit won the seat for the Congress, before losing it in 1989 to the JD's Chhotey Singh Yadav. In 1991, Yadav retained his seat, defeating the former comptroller and auditor general, T N Chaturvedi who was the BJP candidate. The BJP had its revenge in 1996, when Chandra Bhushan Singh defeated Yadav, now on the SP ticket, by 55,000 votes.
