Prime Minister Jawaharlal Nehru won the first two elections from here, in 1957 and 1962. And on his death, sister Vijayalakshmi Pandit took over from him. Nehru had defeated his socialist nemesis Ram Manohar Lohia in 1957, Pandit defeated Janeshwar Mishra. In 1977, Kamala Bahuguna won the seat for the BLD, before joining the Congress and losing the 1980 election to the JP. Ram Pujan Patel won the seat for the Congress in 1984, before crossing over to the JD and winning it in the 1989 and 1991 elections. In 1996, the SP's Jang Bahadur Singh Patel won the seat for the SP, defeating his BSP rival Kanshi Ram by 16,000 votes. The BJP's B D Singh -- who had last won the seat in 1977 for the BLD -- came third, while Ram Pujan Patel of the Congress was in fourth position.
