Margin: 42645 (7.45%)

The BJP's Raja Y Dutta enabled his party to win this constituency for the first time in 1989, before the constituency veered back to the JD's Arjun S Yadav. The Congress managed to rope him in as its candidate in the 1996 election, and he ended up in the fifth position, with 3.55 % of the vote. The seat reverted to the BJP, its candidate Raj Keshar won the seat defeating the SP's 43,000 votes.
