After Sucheta Kriplani won from here on a Congress ticket in 1967, Anand Singh succeeded her in 1971. He was swept aside in the Janata wave of 1977, before he won the seat for the next three terms. In 1991, the constituency voted BJP for the first time, when sitting MP Anand Singh was defeated by the BJP's Brij Bhushan Singh. In 1996, despite a change of candidate, the BJP's Ketki Devi Singh won this seat, defeating ex-Congress MP Anand Singh, now the SP candidate, by 67,000 votes.
