In 1984 businessman Salim Sherwani of the Congress won this seat; in the next election it went the Janata Dal way, electing Sharad Yadav who went on to become textile minister in the V P Singh Cabinet. In 1991, Yadav was defeated by the BJP's Chinmayanand. In 1996, Sherwani was once again in the fray, as the SP candidate, and he defeated the BSP's Brajpal Singh by 46,000 votes. The BJP's Premlal Singh Yadav came a distant third, winning 125,942 votes.
