The year was 1989, and the MP to be elected from here was Mayawati of the BSP. The runner-up was Mangal Ram Premi, of the Janata Dal variations who had come second in previous elections as well. In 1991, Premi contested on the BJP ticket and won, the first time that the constituency had voted saffron. And the loser was Mayawati. In 1996 Premi retained his seat, defeating his SP rival Satish Kumar by just 27,000 votes. The BSP's Chetan Swaroop, who came third, took away 157,339 votes, or 26 %. The Congress? Well, it got 1.01 % of the vote.
