Gobind Ballabh's son K C Pant entered the fray from here in 1962, and represented the constituency for three consecutive terms, till 1971. The Janata wave of 1977 swept him aside, and the 1980 election was won by Narayan Dutt Tiwari. The Janata Dal's Mahendra S Pal won this seat in 1989, and in 1991 the BJP's Balraj Pasi defeated N D Tiwari. In 1996 Tiwari, now a Congress-Tiwari nominee, defeated Pasi by 156,000 votes.
