The seat of Tamil culture had voted non-Congress only twice till 1991, and that was for the CPI and CPI-M. The Congress's A G Subburaman won the seat in 1990 and 1984, and his son A G S Rambabu succeeded him in 1989 and 1991. He fought the 1996 election as the TMC candidate, and defeated his nearest rival, Dr Subramanian Swamy of the Janata Party, by 190,000 votes.
