In 1962 started the Dravida domination. The seat returned former chief minister C N Annadurai of the DMK to Parliament in 1967 before Murasoli Maran took over in 1971. In 1977, Maran was defeated by the Congress's R Venkataraman who retained the seat in 1980. In 1984, actress Vyjayanthimala Bali was elected and in 1989 she defeated the DMK's M Arunachalam. In 1996, the DMK was elected from here after a gap of 25 years, its MP T R Balu winning 538,697 votes. Also in the fray as an Independent was actress Revathi, who won 42,906 votes.
