Former finance minister T T Krishnamachari and the eponym of the TTK group of companies was the first MP from this constituency. From 1967 till 1984, when the Dravida wave swept the state, this constituency went to the DMK, with N V N Somu returned to the Lok Sabha. In 1989 and 1991, thanks to its tie-up with the AIADMK, the Congress's D Pandian won back this seat. In 1996, the seat went back to Somu, who was appointed minister of state for defence in the United Front government and tragically perished in a helicopter crash last winter.
