The Congress's Chatra B Chhetri won the first election uncontested in the first election in 1977. In 1984, former chief minister Nar Bahadur Bhandari was elected as an Independent. In 1989 his wife Dil Kumari Bhandari of the Congress was defeated by the Sikkim Sangram Parishad. She stood again in 1991 on the Congress ticket, and won 90 % of the vote, the highest from this constituency. In 1996, her husband was once again in the fray as an SSP candidate but lost to the Sikkim Democratic Front's Bhim Prasad Dahal.
