The constituency that had voted for the Jan Sangh as early as 1971, for the first time turned to the BJP in 1996, its Subhash Chandra Baheriya defeating the Congress's Mahendra Singh Mewar by roughly 17,000 votes. Also in the fray was former chief minister Shiv Charan Mathur on the Congress-T ticket, who had been elected in 1991 from here on the Congress ticket.
