In 1952 Ramchandra Majhi was elected MP on the Congress plank; he was re-elected in 1957, as an Independent. Likewise, B Gobardhan was elected MP on the JD ticket in 1989; he was re-elected in 1991, on the Congress ticket. The seat remained with the Congress in 1996, with Sushila Triya defeating the BJP candidate by 111,000 votes.
