In 1971 this constituency elected newspaper baron Ramnath Goenka on the Jan Sangh ticket, establishing its leanings despite the Congress doing well in earlier elections. In fact, out of the 11 elections so far, the JS-BJP has won six, and the Congress five. In 1991, A B Vajpayee was elected from here, and though he moved on in 1996 the seat remained with the BJP.
