Another consituency that remained with the Congress after electing an Independent just once, in 1957, including 1977. E V V Patil was elected from here five consecutive times, and his replacement in 1991, K S Deoram, managed to retain the seat, even increasing his party's tally to 63.4 %. In 1996, however, the BJP which had been second in the last two elections, defeated the sitting MP, its candidate Bhimrao Vishnuji Badade winning by 20,000 votes.
