One of the most fickle constituencies in the state, the seat voted PDF in 1952, went to the Congress the next two rounds, elected the CPI in 1967, reverted to the Congress in 1971, voted CPI-M in 1977, took in the Congress in 1980 and 1984, plumbed for the JD in 1989, and opted for the Congress in 1991, before settling down for the BJP in 1996. Kshirsagar K Sonajirao won the seat for the Congress twice, consecutively, in 1980 and 1984, lost in 1989 and took it back in 1991, before losing to another woman in 1996, the BJP's Rajni Patil by 55,000 votes. Rajni Patil joined the Congress in January; her husband has been given the party ticket.
