Sixty candidates contested from here in 1996, and Banwarilal Purohit was elected MP on the BJP ticket. Interestingly, he was elected from in 1984 as well, but as a Congressman, contested and lost the 1991 election as a BJP man! Before 1996, the Congress had lost the seat only once, in 1971, and that to the Forward Bloc.
