The constituency remained with the Congress till 1996, in which it wholeheartedly voted Shiv Sena. But till then, some Congress worthies represented it in Parliament. Former chief minister V P Naik was elected from here in 1977. Succeeding him was Ghulam Nabi Azad who, despite coming from outside the state, won 64.4 % of the vote in 1980. In 1996, V P Naik's nephew and another former chief minister, Sudhakarrao Naik, lost to the Sena's Pundlik Gawli by 17,000 votes.
