V K Krishna Menon was the first MP from here, in 1962, and he defeated Acharya Kripalani, before losing to the official Congress candidate in 1967. In 1977 and in 1980, Dr Subramanian Swamy defeated the Congress candidates. In 1984, Gurudas Kamat of the Congress defeated the BJP's Pramod Mahajan, and in the next round was worsted by the BJP's Jaywantiben Mehta. In 1981 Mehta was in turn trounced by Kamat, but in 1996 Mahajan put one across to Kamat despite the presence of the Republican Party of India's Ramdas Athavale in the fray. Mahajan won by almost 200,000 votes.
