After the 1952 elections which the Congress won, the Communists dominated this constituency till 1980. In 1984, the Congress made a comeback, but the Communists wrested back the seat in 1996 with V V Raghavan of the CPI defeating the Congress candidate by about 1,480 votes. His name: K Karunakaran. The BJP candidate won 41,539 votes.
