Dr Karan Singh won the seat in 1971, 1977 and 1980 for the Congress, the last time being for the Congress-Urs and not Congress-I. In 1989 and 1991 it reverted to the Congress, and for the first time the seat voted the BJP in 1996, with Chaman Lal Gupta handing it over to the Congress candidate.
