In the first two elections, held in 1967 and 1971, the constituency voted Congress, and has been with the National Conference ever since. Saifuddin Soz, the NC heavyweight, was elected in 1984 and 1989 -- the 1991 election was not held here -- and in 1996 Ghulam Rasool Kar, the local Congress chieftain, was elected MP.
