In 1957 the MP from here was Maulana Abul Kalam Azad, and in 1977 it was Dharam Vir. Bhajan Lal became MP from here in 1989, and in 1991 it was Congress heavyweight Avtar Singh Badhana who romped home defeating the Janata Dal candidate. However, in 1996, the BJP's Ram Chander won the seat for his party for the first time.
