Between 1957 and 1984, this constituency was represented by the Gaekwads -- first the cricket-loving Fatehsinhrao and then his youunger brother Ranjitsinh -- a whopping six times, the only break coming in 1967 but that was there was no Gaekwad in the fray. In 1989, the Janata Dal managed to defeat the sitting Congress MP R P Gaekwad, and in the 1991 election the surprise winner was the BJP's Dipika Chikhalia, aka Sita of the teleserial Ramayan. In the 1996, Congress candidate Dilipsinh Satyajitsinh Gaekwad was finally elected as MP, his margin over his BJP rival a minor 17 votes! Another Gaekwad in the fray as an Independent managed to take away more than 10,000 votes.
