Chimanbhai Mehta fought the 1996 election as an Independent and won 1.92 % of the vote, the electorate voting overwhelmingly in favour of the BJP's Harin Pathak, who has been elected from here since 1989. Winning 58.6 % of the vote the first time he was elected, in 1996 Patel had increased his tally to 61.31 %.
