In 1967, this constituency had an unusual MP, Viren J Shah, then elected on the Swatantra Party ticket. In 1971 however, fighting the elections on the Old Congress symbol, he was trounced by the 'real' Congress's nominee. Today, of course, Shah has come full circle, and is one of the BJP's leading lights.
