In the last four elections this constituency has alternated between the Congress and the Bharatiya Janata Party, voting for the former in 1984 and 1991, and plumbing for the BJP in 1989 and 1996. What is also interesting is that at no time have the candidates been returned these four times. In 1984, the Congress had won only 43.7 % of the vote; in 1996 the BJP did only slightly better, winning 49.57 % of the vote.
