B P Mehta hung on as the CPI candidate, coming in as the runner-up in 1984 and 1989 behind the Congress and the BJP respectively. In 1991 he managed to emerge victorious, winning the seat comfortably for the CPI, before reverting to his familiar position in 1996. This time it was behind the BJP's M L Viswakarma.
