Ritlal Prasad Verma first won the seat in 1977 as a Bharatiya Lok Dal candidate. In 1980 he retained the seat for the Janata Party, and lost it in 1984 for the BJP. He came back in 1989, lost in 1991 to the Janata Dal and was re-elected in 1996 as the BJP candidate.
