Kameshwar Prasad of the BJP was behind the winning CPI-M candidate in 1989 but in 1991 there was no trace of him. However, in 1996 the seat voted BJP, with the CPI-M trailing by almost 100,000 votes. The Congress's share of the vote had collapsed from 39.2 % in 1991 to 9.01 % in 1996.
