Margin: 53980 (9.01%)

Former chief minister Jagannath Mishra won this seat once, in 1971; the best position he has reached after that is the second, in 1991, behind the CPI candidate. In 1996, the CPI, which had won the earlier two elections, retained the seat. But cornering 38.09 % of the vote and coming second was the BJP.
