The seat is represented by Congress heavyweight Kotla Vijayabhaskara Reddy who managed to win this seat for the first time in 1977, at the height of the anti-Indira wave. He did lose the seat in 1984, at the height of the Rajiv wave, to the TDP, but has retained it since. In 1996 his share of the vote was 46.43 %, but the combined tally of the TDP's two factions was 50.2 %.
